Founding Director of Grants & Operations
IAIMS is building the measurement infrastructure for trustworthy AI. We have the technical vision, the 501(c)(3) status, and the roadmap. What we need now is a builder who can help us secure the capital to bring it to life. This is a founding team role. You won't be joining a funded organization—you'll be helping build one.
Responsibilities
- Research, write, and submit grant proposals to foundations, government programs, and institutional funders aligned with AI safety, measurement science, and public interest technology
- Help establish the organizational infrastructure—policies, processes, and systems a growing nonprofit needs
- Partner with leadership on funding strategy, funder relationships, and organizational development
- Manage funder communications and reporting as grants are secured
- Build systems for grant tracking, compliance, and financial oversight
Qualifications
- Experience writing successful grant proposals (government, foundation, or institutional)
- Comfortable with ambiguity and building from zero
- Strong written communication and storytelling skills
- Self-directed and able to manage complex, multi-stage projects independently
- Interest in AI governance, measurement, or public interest technology
Preferred
- Experience in early-stage or startup nonprofit environments
- Background in AI, technology, or research sectors
- Existing relationships with relevant funders
- Understanding of the AI safety and governance landscape
Compensation
This role follows a Grant-to-Hire model. Phase 1: We collaborate on grant proposals together as founding work. Phase 2: When we secure funding, your full-time salary and a founding bonus are written into the grant budget as standard line items. This is how most early-stage nonprofits are built.
